of Pharmacochemistry | The I. Kutateladze Institute of Pharmacochemistry of the Georgian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1932 as a research unit for natural products urged by the fact of rich floristic and mineral resources actually existing in Georgia. This fact was the general reason of development of pharmaceutical science and pharmaceutical industry in Georgia. The main direction of research in the Institute of Pharmacochemistry respectively is the investigation of plants, accumulating biologically active compounds of various chemical classes and drug development using these substances. Fundamental and applied investigations focused on the substances of plant origin allowed to develop a number of novel medicinal preparations suitable for various curative indications. The results of fundamental and applied research carried out for several years also contribute to construction of Chemical - Pharmaceutical factories in Tbilisi and Batumi (formerly Batumi Caffeine plant manufacturing natural caffeine from tea-shrub wastes). At present the Institute employs approximates 130 persons, including 10 Doctors of Science and 50 Candidates of Science, pharmacists, biologists, technologists, chemists, engineers, botanists and physicians. The Institute carries out investigations by following directions: - pharmacobotanical investigations in definite geographical regions to reveal areas occupied by medicinal plants, and to as certain extent of natural resources permissible for utilization;
- investigation of the species biological characteristics for development of agricultural recommendations;
- morphological and anatomical systematization of medicinal herbs;
- studies of plant chemical composition, extraction, physical and chemical investigations of separate chemical classes: alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, steroid and triterpene glycosides, lipids, flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, anthraquinons, lectins, polysaccharides, proteolytic enzymes;
- evaluation of biological activities and pharmacological investigations of natural substances;
- semi synthesis of bioactive compounds using natural substances, e. g. synthesis of steroidal hormonal preparations based on steroid sapogenin tigogenin;
- complex pharmacological and toxicological investigation of obtained substances and preparations (including preclinical study);
- elaboration of technologies for extraction of natural chemical compounds, preparations of crude extracts and various pharmaceutical formulations;
- development of analytical and standardization methodologies.
The staff is also competent in preparing the technical documentation for developed drugs, in organizing of pilot manufacturing and industrial issue of pharmaceutical products. Actually in the Institute of Pharmacochemistry are operating subdivisions responsible for the natural drug development starting with search and screening of biologically active substances, and manufacturing of finished products at the end. Respectively, besides the special laboratories at the Institute’s disposal a pilot manufacturing plant is operating, and also pharmaceutical factory building destined for manufacturing of phytochemical (i.e. plant origin) and finished pharmaceutical formulations is under construction now. The Institute possesses experimental fields of medicinal herbs in different regions of Georgia: 22 hectares in Tbilisi, 70 ha in Western Georgia, and 90 ha in Eastern Georgia where the following works are conducted: - studies of biological characteristics of important herb species;
- agricultural recommendations for cultivation;
- commercial reproduction of medicinal herbs for marketing.
